\n\t\tWhat is a cataract?\n\t<\/h2>\n\t

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and cataract surgery is perhaps the most effective surgical treatment in all of medicine.<\/h4>\n

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. If you imagine that the eye works like a camera, the cataract is clouding of the lens in that camera. The result is a blurring of images which can manifest in a variety of ways including difficulty reading at night or in low light conditions or difficulty seeing road signs or having glare while driving.<\/h4>\n

Despite all the recent significant technological advances, being diagnosed with cataracts may still cause you some concern. Let us reassure you that cataracts are one of the most common conditions that can affect vision. Through cataract surgery you can improve your vision and see more clearly and have brighter and sharper vision.<\/h4>\n

Following the removal of the cataract, an intraocular lenses (IOL) is placed inside the eye to adequately focus the light on the retina. Older intraocular lenses such as the Non-foldable IOL are infrequently used today as they cannot be folded and therefore require a larger incision which needs sutures for its closure. These sutures cause a longer healing time and more discomfort post operatively. Modern technology now allows for insertion of foldable IOLs which are inserted through a 2.2 mm incision. This allows for a quicker recovery and less discomfort following surgery.<\/h4>\n

In addition to the standard foldable IOL, Aspheric foldable lenses (AFIOL) reflect yet another technological advance. These lenses reduce potentially distracting light aberrations from reaching the retina. They have been shown to allow for higher contrast sensitivity compared to standard foldable IOLs.<\/h4>\n

Even further technological advances now make it possible to correct for astigmatism with the use of TORIC Intraocular lenses as well as correct for both distance and near vision with the use of Multifocal IOLs, essentially eliminating the need for spectacles post operatively in most patients.<\/h4>\n

Each IOL has a particular function and not every type is suited for every patient.
